Several comments were left implying that there is indeed such a shortage. Here is one of them:

There is indeed a shortage of WOVEN dental floss…Johnson and johnson won’t say why exactly but for about 5 months it hasn’t been replenished on store shelves anywhere.

I’ve done some additional research and found that there is indeed a shortage of this type of floss out there. Apologies for implying otherwise in my previous post. Hopefully there are answers to this – or its back on the shelves – soon!

Like all studies, there are very specific parameters in place here, so I’m not quite ready to sign off on this tactic yet. It’s definitely interesting and I thought worth sharing. Have you ever heard to do this before?

Think again, because according to Lifehacker you can do just that. Sort of.

Hold your picture where you’d like it go without touching the wall until you find the perfect spot then gently tap the frame against the wall. This should leave a small toothpaste mark to indicate where you should insert a nail. Wipe away any leftover toothpaste once the nail is in.

Not quite as surprising as the toothpaste actually making the picture stay on the wall, but in any case, this is a great tip, so I thought I would share.

If you use one of these, you know how badly it can build up. Their advice:

To keep the gunk in check and easily clean when necessary put a layer of toilet paper, paper towels, or tissues in the bottom of the cup.

They then recommend changing that every few months, which is where they lose me a bit. There’s no reason not to change that weekly, and in fact, there’s no reason to not simply clean the cup every single week!

Even those of your without dishwashers…this is just a cup. Take the time to clean it, for the sake of your mouth (and your bathroom).

However, in searching for some info on a particular floss product, I came across some utterly ridiculous, and wanted to share.

This is the actual text – I haven’t changed it at all:

Is there a current national shortage of dental floss? Or a manufacturing deficiency? What are we and other diligent flossers to do? Please help us, Answer Man. You’re our only hope. — Frustrated about Floss

Sorry, Flossy, but I can’t find any evidence of a critical national shortage of this product. I called some local pharmacies and stores and they say there’s enough floss to go around, so I’ll just recommend that you keep trying.

It’s good to know people in this person’s area of Minnesota are flossing – not doing so is a leading cause of periodontal disease, after all. That said…I’m not sure the first thing I’d do when confronted with difficulty finding dental floss is write “The Answer Man” an email.
